Marie Erbs: Return from PSG to London City Lionesses
Marie Erbs returns to London City Lionesses from PSG and looks forward to a new chapter.
Former England keeper Mary Erbs has made an important return to Women's Super League side London City Lionesses after leaving Paris Saint-Germain. The change, the team announced, will help the player and the agent most familiar with the game return to the local sector. Erbs, 33, was a key member of the England squad that won the European Cup in 2022 and reached the finals of the 2023 World Cup. He is set to begin his stint with the Lionesses on July 1. He previously joined PSG from Manchester United.
The London City Lionesses, owned by American millionaire Michelle Kang, made their debut in the WSL last year, and finished sixth in the table impressively in their first season. Expressing his excitement for the new chapter, Erbs said, "I'm very happy to be joining this college. I'm looking forward to getting started. The values of this college reflect what I want to represent."
On the issue and outlook behind his decision, he said, "Our conversations were very positive, and I wanted to hear more every time I spoke to the team."
Erbs described the background and perspective of his decision, including the new training center: "This college epitomizes what our owner, Michelle (Kong) and the entire team want to achieve".
Looking ahead to future challenges, the 53-cap England international spoke about the tough environment of the competition. "It's not going to be easy, the WSL is very competitive. The team finished second in a beautiful [introductory] season and now has to work to move up the table and finish higher," he said.
Erbs, who retired from the national team last year, has published a dossier containing his criticism of England coach Sarina Wiegmann and fellow goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.
