Portugal drew 1–1 with DR Congo in the first round of FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K in Houston. Abdulrahman Al-Jassim of Qatar served as the main referee for the match held at the NRG Stadium in Houston.
Following the result, Russian sports commentator Dmitry Guberniev slammed Portugal's performance and Cristiano Ronaldo. "Football should not be approached this way! Football will punish people like that! Ronaldo (Grisha) should be removed from the first team! Wasted two chances, his time is up! There are many more!" He posted on his Telegram channel.

Portugal's captain Cristiano Ronaldo started the match and played the full 90 minutes. This will be the sixth World Cup appearance for the 41-year-old forward.
