Chennai Super Kings have announced major changes to their coaching staff ahead of the Indian Premier League 2027 season. With the recent appointment of Zaheer Khan as the head coach, now the assistant coaching staff has also been confirmed. Former South African all-rounder LB Morkel and former England off-spinner Gareth Petty are joining in the support role. Along with this, former player Mohit Sharma has been appointed as the new bowling coach of the team.

Stephen Fleming's departure is notable as a backdrop to these changes. Fleming, who was the head coach with the Chennai team for 16 years, took over as the head coach of the England Men's Test team, and the Chennai team's coaching set-up also changed. After that, longtime assistant coach Mike Hussey, pitching coach Eric Simons, strength and conditioning specialist Greg King, and physical therapist Tommy Simczek all stepped in.

But some key faces from last season continue. Last season's assistant bowling coach Sreedharan Sreeram, known for his precision fielding, James Pastor (fielding coach), senior administrator A.R. Srikanth continue in their responsibilities. Thus, a balance of both innovation and continuity is seen in the Chennai team's coaching system.

LB Morkel, who has a deep history with the Chennai team, is remembered by the fans for his impressive record of 827 runs and 76 wickets in 78 matches from 2008 to 2013. His experience in understanding the game is expected to complement Zaheer Khan's approach. The arrival of Gareth Petty, known for his successful coaching stints at Surrey and 'The Hundred' bases in England in recent years, is seen as a sign of subtle improvements in the spin department and defence.

More importantly, the appointment of Mohit Sharma as the bowling coach will strengthen Chennai's pace and variation bowling plans. Having picked up 58 wickets in 48 matches for Chennai over four seasons between 2013–2019, Mohit has on-field experience in how to approach the Seppach pitch and what rhythm to bowl in the power play and death overs. He retired from all competitive sides in December 2025 and is now set to lead the young bowlers at the same venue.

All these changes will help Chennai team maintain their signature style of play – strong spin support, accurate fielding and controlled death over bowling – and add new ideas for the 2027 season. The combination of old faces and a supporting cast of fresh ideas will bring about a change in the quality of competition to preserve the team's culture of long service.

As the IPL 2027 moves towards the pre-training phase, the Chennai Super Kings team's coaching set-up has become clear. Under the leadership of Zaheer Khan and the combination of veterans like LB Morkal, Gareth Petty and Mohit Sharma, a solid improvement is expected in the team's platform and tactics.

What happens next

New coaches like LB Morkal and Mohit Sharma should play a key role in improving the team's potential. Practices and plans for the next IPL season are expected to begin soon. Thus, Chennai Super Kings will try to regain their leading position in IPL 2027.
