Rangers head coach Derek McGuinness is set to return to former club Hearts' home ground of Tynecastle this week as the Scottish Premiership resumes its season. Realizing the journey will not be easy, McGuinness openly admits to feeling 'guilty' about his decision to leave Hearts for Ibrox (Rangers) in the summer. Following this, he has agreed in advance to the situation where there will be a difficult reception from the fans.
Despite McGuinness's short spell at Hearts, he insists the team were a breath of fresh air on the Scottish stage last season. He recalled that the fact that they missed the opportunity to touch the podium for the first time in 66 years on the final day was still fresh in his mind and that the journey that took the team from the 'Lower Six' region to 80 points made him proud. Having led Hearts for most of the season, McGuinness has not forgotten the pain of losing the title in the final stages of a 3-1 defeat at Celtic Park.
“My favorite days were there, the team was well organized,” he shares. At the same time, he reckons Hearts remain a title contender this season under new head coach Wouter Vranken. His view is that it reflects Hearts' growth and approachable squad.
McGuinness himself says he didn't expect the best wishes from the fans at Tynecastle. Rather, it is a 'nostalgia' that there should be two-way respect when it comes to the field; But he also understands that it will not happen in reality. He says he felt 'guilty' about his career decision, even though he thought it was time to get together and digest the pain after last season.
McGuinness also explained that he understands the mood of Hearts fans. The team's captain and leading goalscorer Laurence Shanklund recalled the disappointment he felt when he announced his arrival at Ibrox, and admitted the fans' disappointment was only natural when he himself moved in the same direction a few weeks later. His belief that some controversial decisions went against him in the final stages of last season; His regret is also evident that without them a history of winning a title beyond the Old Firm would have been possible.
Now, it's not just old memories he's looking at in charge of Rangers; It's a professional professor handling Wednesday's clash at Tynecastle. Despite the 'warm' reception from the fans, he says his love and pride for the Hearts era will not change, and his consolation is that the approachable squad he has built is strong enough to compete in the title race today. The return trip is a further reminder that McGuinness' long-term career goal is to one day realize his dream of breaking the Old Firm's dominance on the Scottish Premiership stage.
What happens next
McGuinness is prepared for a tough reception at Tynecastle, but he respects his team's talent. Under Hearts' new head coach Wouter Vranken, the team has a chance to challenge for the title this season. This will have an important match impact in the match between Rangers and Hearts.
